Linguistic Meaning: A Summary Of Keith Allan'S Book On Linguistic Meaning

        It takes a long time to summarize four chapters of Keith Allan's book titled Linguistic Meaning (Volume 1) published by Routledge & Kegan Paul in 1986. The purpose of summarizing the book is intended for the students of the English Department, Faculty of Arts Udayana University who learn the linguistic meaning, and they must have a clear understanding of it. Subjects, such as Semantics, Pragmatics, etc in the department need a deeper understanding of meanings, and the students should have a good foundation on the science of meanings. These are available in the four chapters of Book 1 including Beginning an Account of Linguistic meaning: Speaker, Hearer, Contact, and Utterance, What is Meaning? Meaningful Properties and meaning Relations, and Lexicon Semantics, although the book (Volume 1) consists of 9 chapters.

The other purpose is to share information on methods and approaches in linguistic meanings. Furthermore, I was impressed by my lecturer Keith Allan, when I attended his lecture on Semantics at Monash University, Melbourne Australia to complete my Master's Degree in Linguistics in 1987. It is important to note that it is not easy to learn linguistic leaning so that everybody must be aware of this. Therefore, there must be a good book, method, and approach for teaching the science of meanings.
